Lyrically, "Once Dumb" speaks on the topic of seeing your ex-lover do better without you, than with you, after you've parted ways with them. Feeling so bitter and old, and then letting go of it and learning to live differently; feeling young and wise. From certain standpoints, the song is a romanticized ode to the feelings of monotony and mundaneness that comes with the 'healing' period people go through after ending relationships; "you're the one who said you missed me, it's been six months and I'm staring at my whiskey".
